Big Weekend

Good weekend in Colorado. The short version, On Friday, my gf closed on her new place, helped her pack and move. Ran the Eerie Erie 5k on Saturday morning, helped pack and move some more. Saturday night went to a crazy halloween party in Denver. Too much to write about here, let’s just say it was not a place for shy people. Was awake most of Saturday night and was dragging by Sunday morning. More packing, moving, and unpacking. Did get a nap in though. Keri’s new place is looking great. She was amazing this weekend with getting everything done, even with the move and all, she still came out to the race on Saturday morning. I really appreciate having such a supportive gf.

The race went very well. Warmed up for about 3 miles. It warmed up nicely, so I ran in shorts and a short sleeve T. Wore the Newton’s. I like them a lot. Can’t say I like the neon green color at all, but they are super light and remind me to keep my foot strick midfoot (they don’t have much in the way of heel cushioning, if your form goes and you heel strick, you know it right away). The goal was to go out comfortably hard for the first mile, then suffer as much as I could for the next two. I feel pretty good about reaching those goals. It’s unfortunate that suffering for me only produces a 20:35 (6:38/mile). But that’s were I am right now. I missed the mile mark, but came through 2 miles at 13:20 (6:40/mile) and through 3 miles at 20:00 (in 6:40), finished the last point one in 35 seconds (6:00/mile pace). I’m pretty happy with that considering the course is on a gentle slope, down out to the turnaround at about 1.25 miles and then gentle up all the way to almost the 3 mile mark, then it flattens out. That jives with what I felt, I was definitely hurting during that last mile, so the increase in effort matches holding the pace. My average HR was 186 and my max was 194 bpm (yes, I have the heart of a hummingbird).

Four and half weeks till the goal race (Broomfield Turkey Trot). I’m feeling pretty good about getting under 20. OA Place Name Hometown Age Sex In Sex Div In Div Time Pace 19. Philip Mazza Denver CO 39 M 16th 30-39 6th 20:35 6:38
