Spotty Blogging....and the Longmont Sprint tri

Still haven't decided what to do with this blog. Just not that interested in using it as a training log. Actually, I'm not logging a whole lot. Just times and distances on my trusty spreadsheet/log/calender. It seems I'm not nearly as worried about the numbers this year, only that I'm working hard when I'm supposed to be.

Raced the Longmont Sprint Tri yesterday. 525yd pool swim/12.1mile bike/3.22 mile run. Went 1:02:30 last year. The plan for this year was pretty simple, Just swim, Easy on the first loop of the bike, then ride like I didn't have to run/ 1st mile of the run under control and then go to the hurt locker. In the back of my head I had the time goal of breaking one hour.

I found out my wave didn't start till 9:49, so I decided to ride up to the race site. Loaded a backpack and left the hosue at 8. 23 miles up to Centennial Pool. It was a really nice morning and I had a friendly wind most of the way. I just shot right up 287. Normally I avoid this road, but at 8 am on a Sunday it's pretty empty and has a nice wide shoulder and nice view of the mountains. I had some tunes going(in my right ear only) and really enjoyed the spin.

Had all sort so time to set up. Got in a 20 min jog. Hung out and eventually started at 10:15. Swim was unevental. 7:33 at the door leading to the parking lot. Call it 7:22 at the wall, that's 1:24/100 yards. I'm ok with that, I just settled in and got on the guys feet in front. I milked the turns and just cruised. One hour at Ironman is 1:25/100yd. so I'm not far off my goal pace with 12 weeks to go.

Fumbled a little in transition, but got rolling. Easy up the first hill and up Pace. Still too hard. I've got to check the power files for each lap, but I'm sure the first had the highest, the second lap went well. Jason K. caught me here and moved ahead. This was perfect. I told myself to forget the run and not let him go. He gapped me at Union two weeks ago. I hung and we came into T2 together. 31:0? 23.6 mph average

I had a pretty fast T2 and surged the first 1/4. I wanted to make it hurt for him to come with me. Great idea, but it hurt me too. By the mile he was in my shoulder. I was a little worried. We turned down 5th and I leaned into it and pushed. I gapped him which surprised me. From there I just hung on.
mile 1 - 6:41
mile 2 - 13:05 (6:24)
mile 3 - 19:31 (6:26)
.22 - 1:36
5k would have been 20:12

I surged at the end to catch one last guy. Kind of silly, as we started in waves and I had no idea what his time was. But he was there, so I went.

Ended up with 1:00:58. 10th overall(out of 290) and 3rd in 35-39AG. Last year I was 12th o.a. in a much smaller field.

Collected myself, got in a 2 mile cool down run. Showered, ate, hung out some more and then started the ride home. Took County Line rd home, 27 miles. Getting home was a little tough. I definitely didn't hydrate enough and had that nasty throbbing headache starting.

All in all a good day. 700yds od swimming, 60 miles of riding and 7 miles of running.
