Been doing a lot of zone 4 and 5 work lately. Trying to raise the top end speed. Lots of reasons why, the short version is:
I spent most of last season in zones 1 and 2. It's time to get faster
Short days and cold temps make it tough to go for 3 hour bike rides
Pain is good
I've been on the look out for things to help keep the motivation up. This clip from the '01 Tour does it for me. Cool, Calm, Calculated and Brutal. It's beautiful.
I'm stoked to throw down come May! I've distilled my season goals down to one...
PR at every distance.
May 17th - Season Opener Sprint - Boulder Res
May 30th - Longmont Sprint (Goal = Break 1 hour. Last year I went 1:02 and change)
June 13th - Rocky Gap Sprint- Cumberland Maryland
June 14th - C&O Towpath Assault (182 miles in one day, not a race, just a stoopid training day)
June 21st - 5430 Sprint - Boulder Res (not sure on this yet, this might be over doing it)
June 28th - Buffalo Springs Half - Lubbock, Tx (Goal = sub 5 hrs)
July 12th - Boulder Peak (last year 2:25)
Aug 1st - Tri for Your Cause Sprint - Boulder Res
August 30th - Ironman Louisville

Tell me more about this 182 miles in a day thing.
Cumberland Md to Washington DC. It's the old towpath for the canal that linked Pittsburgh to DC. The trail is actually finished all the way to Pittsburgh now. Here's the link

You need a mtn bike or cyclocross bike. Most of it is not paved. Water pumps every 5 to 15 miles. And you pass by lots of little towns. Should be a good training day for ironman. We are going on June 14th. You in? Oh and we are doing a sprint triathlon the day before :)
I fold.
ahh...that is one sweet video. thanks phil!
