Stroke and Stride #3

33 out of 150 finishers
3 of 17 in my age group (but way WAY off second place)

One of the things that has happened this year that has made it such a good year so far is that I've become better at setting race goals. I used to be all about the finish time, or pace or age group placing. the problem with those types of goals is that you can't control them. If it's windy, or raining, there goes your speed. And since you have no control as to who else shows up in your age group, setting a goal of breaking the top whatever is not the best plan. So this year, I've been setting goals that focus on how I execute the race. These are the things you have control over. What efforts will you push at different parts of the race? How many calories to take in? And my personal favorite, negative split the run.
For this stroke and stride, I had two goals, swim relaxed and smooth and negative split the run. The swim went well. I started as left as I could and right after the dock, I turned left to get even further away from the mass. Just kept things easy, kept my head low in the water and swam with a catch-up stroke. The run on the beach between loop 1 and 2 took 45 seconds. So loop 1 was 12:18 and loop2 was 12:52. I was looking for an even split swim, I missed that a little, but I’m still quite happy with the way it turned out. Mostly because I stayed calm and relaxed in the traffic and a I sighted pretty well.

On the run the plan was to go as hard as I could without struggling. I wanted to negative split the run, so I chilled a little going up the first hill. The two loop swimmers start first, then the one loop swimmers go. So by the time I get to the run, there are about 150 out there running already. It makes it impossible to tell where you in your race, but it gives you a ton of folks to chase! So that was pretty much it for me. Run tall, maintain a quick turn over, lean into the run and pass as many people as I could. Ended up in a sprint finish and 20:12 for my run time. So close to my goal of breaking 20. But I have no complaints, I ran as well as I could for the day and met the true goals of running relaxed and negative splitting.

For the weekend, I plan on doing a longish solo ride to spend some serious time in “ironman race mode”. It’s time to start narrowing down the nutrition and pacing. And that is hard to do when you ride with others. There tend to be lots of breaks and pace changes when I go out with the group. Then next weekend is Loveland Lake2Lake. This will be a great test. Longish ride, ~30 miles and a 10k run.

Stay the course. Kia Kaha
