How about that, I won my age group! It’s all about who doesn’t show up :) Overall, this went really well. I got a little out of sorts at the end of the first lap of the swim, but then took my time on the beach and just relaxed through the rest. These races will be good for me. Next time the goal for the swim will be to even split (the lap2 time above also contains the beach run) AND not let traffic and bumping mess with my head. Get bumped, settle back down and find the rhythm again. Last night the bumps really messed with my mojo. IM and Peak will be traffic heavy, so these races are perfect for practicing.
The run went really well. I even tried to race! Michael Kelly and I both left transition at the same time. Michael is pretty quick. I thought, heck, why not. In the back of my head I was thinking I could get close to 20 minutes for the 5k. 20 minutes is the time I have stuck in my head as “fast”. Go better than 20 minutes and I’m fast. Well, MK went up the hill toward the boat house with purpose and I followed suit. I’ll have to check the hr data, but I’m sure it was my highest hr of the night. Oops. I stuck with him though and we settled in and cruised to the turn around. I faltered a little here and he gapped me. My stomach was feeling a little sour and it was enough to slow me for just a minute or so. I held the gap all the way back until just before the 3 mile mark. He got into a sprint and pulled away right at the end.
Couple of cool things here: I ran 21:01 on tired legs. Between Sunday’s race and Tuesday’s long run, I wasn’t feeling zippy. I got in 4 miles before the start of the S&S as well. And probably more importantly, I am feeling confident enough in my fitness to actually try to “race”. Last year, I won’t have even attempted to keep up with someone as fast as Michael.
